چکیده
Abstract We present two studies exploring how participants respond when a speaker contrasts ideas, then expresses an ambiguous preference towards one of them. Study 1 showed that, reading speaker’s as text, tended to choose whatever was said last matching the preference, reflecting recent-mention bias anaphora resolution. In 2, we asked whether this pattern changed for audio versions our stimuli. found that it did not. observers used gesture disambiguate preference. Participants watched videos in which statements were spoken. Co-speech gestures produced during each statement, different locations. Next, option ‘gesture disambiguating’ trials, statement accompanied by same spatial location accompanying first statement. non-disambiguating’ no third occurred. chose more often disambiguating compared non-disambiguating trials. Our findings add literature on resolution anaphoric reference involving concrete entities and discourse deixis, extend show indexing abstract ideas are also comprehension.

Learning to Disambiguate Potentially Subjective Expressions
The goal of this work is recognizing opinionated and evaluative (subjective) language in text. The ability to recognize such language would be beneecial for many NLP applications such as question answering, information extraction, summarization, and genre detection. This paper focuses on disambiguating potentially subjective expressions in context, based on the density of other clues in the sur...
متن کاملGenerating Contrastive Referring Expressions
The referring expressions (REs) produced by a natural language generation (NLG) system can be misunderstood by the hearer, even when they are semantically correct. In an interactive setting, the NLG system can try to recognize such misunderstandings and correct them. We present an algorithm for generating corrective REs that use contrastive focus (“no, the BLUE button”) to emphasize the informa...

Children’s ability to interpret color adjective noun phrases (e.g., red butterfly) as contrastive was examined in an eyetracking study with 6-year-old Russian children. Pitch accent placement (on the adjective red, or on the noun butterfly) was compared within a visual context containing two red referents (a butterfly and a fox) when only one of them had a contrast member (a purple butterfly) o...
